evolutionary data processing for music evolution Jonatas Manzolli, Artemis Moroni, Fernando Van Zuben, Ricardo Gudwin The Vox Populi software allows users to compose or change sounds by means of an algorithm system and evolutionary data processing, which employs a vocabulary related to natural genetics. Individuals are elements of the population and in the software they correspond to four notes or to a four-voice group comprised of soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass. They can also be referred to as chromosomes. They are generated randomly and represented by twenty-eight bits, divided into four groups of seven. Each chord is analized under three criteria: harmony, melody, and octave. By adding up the total punctuation, the best individuals are classified and chosen to be used in the creation of sounds (songs, samples, noise, timbres, etc). When a group is formed, it is played as MIDI or sung as a choir, and is repeated until a new group is selected. Both crossing-over (a change in the position of the notes in the musical scale) and mutation (the introduction of a new element in the scale) are possible, in order to compose new melodies. | Nota-Anna: a
visualization of the movements of the human body Analívia Cordeiro Cordeiro's work consists in examining the behavioral effects of the new technological instruments. Frequenlty, whoever works in front of a computer is under a lot of distress. The new instruments usually cause pain and affect the emotional system. Someone playing a videogame or working on his/her computer suffers of physical rigidity, immobility, and muscular tonus. Cordeiro proposes the development of instruments that provide pleasure, stir self-confidence, and respect the biological function of the body. One must beware of products that are introduced in the market with no other intention but profit, having not undergone any kind of tests. Movement was considered a drawing in the air by ancient civilizations. With the advent of new technologies it became possible to make it concrete. The Nota-Anna software renders all the trajectory of the movement in time and space visual, showing all its emotional expression. The movement is captured by one camera which sends the image to the computer and the reading is done frame-by-frame in a tridimensional way. The language used is JAVA and can be run in any machine. |

| Infobodies: unfolding
and potentialities Rejane Cantoni, Fernando Fogliano, Denise Garcia, Barbara Rauch, Daniela Kutschat, Lucila Tragtenberg, Milton Sogabe, Rafael Vasconcelos, Renato Hildebrand, Rosângella Leote The Invenção Symposium was wrapped up by the multimedia presentation Infobodies: unfolding and potentialities, a kind of electronic opera that gathered projection, singing, robotic and computer-generated voices and a text that worked as a kind of summary of the last four days, since it encompassed a good part of the concepts discussed in the exhibitions. Here's a quotation from the event folder: "a part-system is aggregated as a fluid body into the multilayered realities of the event. The fluid body's capability of data transfer intends to stimulate multiple perceptions of the mutating system in real time and to provoke associations and thoughts other than known." Following the show, Otávio Donasci presented one of his videocreatures. The artwork had been referred to by Eduardo Kac in the opening lecture as one of the most important in the history of Brazilian electronic art. A screen applied to the artist's body creates a hybrid being, half-human, half-electronic. The project started being developed in the 1980s, therefore prior to the contemporary concern of discussing a possible path to be trailed jointly by arts, science, and technology. |
