THE PRESENCE OF CREATIVITY IN DESIGN-ORIENTED CAREERS | |

Abstract: |
The teaching of project execution as an area of knowledge inside of which design, architecture, landscape, industrial, graphics, film and textile, are disciplined areas, which has the particularity of including in its realization the artistic, ( intuition, creativity, sensitivity) as well as those called the pure sciences. Historically, design pedagogy has been taught through an academic framework, in which the student goes through three distinct definite levels: first, morphological knowledge; then the syntax of basic elements; and the third stage involves finding meaning in the work achieved. Inside this traditional process of teaching ( and learning) in design pedagogy, the appropriation and knowledge of certain stylistic tendencies is proposed by the professors, who see themselves as models for the system. These courses are centered around a theory that focuses more on the end product than in the creative process itself. It proposes a clear model to the student, which not only includes production, if not another elements like: ways of representation, themes, references to works in existence, etc. Our first proposal is to establish an heuristic path that opens alternative routes in the methodology of traditional project processes. The heuristic object investigated is a real, not virtual entity, which is constructed without previous models, and supercedes the above-mentioned sequences, in which the student can self-evaluate his/ her own work, inside a theoretical framework that validates these unconventional methods. The second proposals alludes to when this course should appear in the curriculum. We believe that the "heuristic" should be integrated in the first year of the basic course of degree studies. Our intention is to prepare the student to pass through the traditional academic structure, while making him aware of different ways of thinking and creating, and the possibility of open discussion of these themes with course leaders. We consider that heuristics should be made available to students at the end of their degree studies, as an autonomous reflection of their life experience at this level and as an opportunity for the student to reflect on his impending career. |
