NOTES FOR AN ANATOMY OF CREATION | |
| Keywords: | sensory stimuli, memories, habit formation, human amnesia. | |
Abstract: |
If we accept that the creative person regularly shows his or her potentially, and that a creative act may imply, for instance, definition of a strategy, elaboration of a product, raising new issues or the solution of a problem, we must reach the conclusion that this action is a function of the brain which at least comprises a sensorial area and a system of memories. If we further consider that the knowledge necessary to solve a situation is spread on different areas of the brain acting in paralell, and that operation of reasoning strategies - another characteristic of invention - requires that the representation of innumerable facts remain present during a sufficiently long period of time, it is easy to understand that for our reasoning, images must not only be "in focus" but also active in the brain in order to be used. This is due to the fact that the decissions arising during a creative process are loaded with uncertainties and require a large amount of experiences related with the external and inner world of the individual. These knowledges are sequentially recovered by the brain and this is exactly the task where processes of attention and memory are needed so that the greatest number of components may be exposed, as on a screen, in order to be manipulated in real time. Detection and analysis of amnesias has permitted us to understand some of the connections between the structures that supply the memory located inside the brain and the sensorial areas located in the cortex. It has also helped to understand in which manner are the stimuli, for instance visual, transformed into memories available at the time of creation. How the memory and the habits of design interact in the brain is a subject of recent research and this work will mainly point out some verificable guide lines that might assist us to understand the "anatomy of creation". |
