Abstract: |
OPUS (1996-present) focuses the
interactive generation of infographic images, named generically digital, under the
causality-acausality binomial. Conceived in 1990, in essence it seeks for an association
among intuitive and logical qualities of the human being ('author') and logical algorithms
of the computer ('co-author'). In this context, technology migrates from the intermediate
function to the bridging of inter-creation, configuring a shift of the individual as the
center of creation and as its measure. The project also comprises software development,
hardware and software acquisition with the participation of Carlos Freitas, as imaging
system specialist. Its realization was funded by a one-year grant got in 1996, a Vitae
Fellowship in Arts (Vitae is a private Brazilian institution funding social, cultural and
educational programs). The project core was developed during 1996-1997, as ideas for
revisions and expansions come into view the project became open-ended. The
certainty-uncertainty polarity lies on a modeled and induced randomness. There is here an
apparent contradiction, to use a logical arrangement to overcome a logic, mobilizing a
computer system which disrupt a major trait attributed by common sense to computers: its
precision, an almost non-fallibility condition. The partnership axis remains in the
conjunct image elaboration within a creation-production continuum and alluding to a
process, signalling metaphorically to the interleaving of human and computer memories. The
basis for that collaboration is the image transformation; it is articulated through
modular programs done for this purpose, at current stage directed to still 2-D raster
images (Apple Power Macintosh platform and Adobe Photoshop plug-ins). A synthesis of those
inter-relations reflects in the images produced and grouped as the CHO essay (1996-1999).
As a complex system for image making, OPUS points to a particular format: art as process
and process as art. |

| Carlos Fadon Vicente Photographer and electronic media artist. Born in São Paulo in 1945, he
holds the Civil Engineering and the Fine Arts degrees from the Universidade de São Paulo
and Master of Fine Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MEC/CAPES
fellowship). The status of photography as a system for elaboration of realities as well as
essays about the urban landscape are his key issues, since he started with photography in
1975. Drawn from his cultural background, the concern for art and technology synergy
further developed in 1985 through aesthetic and conceptual inquiries focusing mostly
interaction and visual inter-relation topics - making use of digital imaging resources,
multimedia design and telecommunications experiments. Living and working in São Paulo, he
has participated in one-man shows, symposia and group exhibitions, his works are present
in public and private collections, and has images and articles published in the Americas
and Europe. Visiting Research Fellow at the CAiiA-STAR program in 1999 on a fellowship
from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture. |
