Abstract:

GoTo0 is a research project that combines the paradigms of
non-linear storytelling and immersive human-computer interaction,
in order to build open-ended, dynamic storyScapes. It focuses on
the phenomena that cannot be experienced in the physical world.
E.g. we target at narratives that resemble thought processes (as
dreaming or association); we research the design of dynamic spaces
that can evolve from the structure of the stories, and from the
interaction with the participants.

The research is applied in the domain of:

1. interfacing and interaction

- interfaces familiar in hypermedia are not suitable for an
immersive environment; we work on developing alternative metaphors
or methods such as tactile feedback, gesture recognition, etc.

2. content development

- the form of the content has to be adapted to the (dis)advantages
of an immersive environment: problems of time (e.g. usage of media
with a specific duration, synchronization), space (e.g. how one
experiences a story spatially) and structure (e. g. hyperlinking
and transitions) of a narrative environment are addressed

GoTo0 is a system of contextually connected episodes, sharing
fifteen common themes, such as movement, pain, change, etc.
Time-line of the narrative is generated dynamically, based on the
participants' path through the themes and their movements in the
storyScape. As the participants move, they 'crack' the
environment, opening the links to various episodes. The episodes
are ordered in a way that the user can never experience the same
fragment twice. Structure and presentation of the narrative are
not predefined, but are calculated in real time, from the
parameters attributed to each episode.

The stories are based on the research about the 'virtual
realities' throughout history: such as the ecstatic experiences of
pagan shamans in Scandinavian countries, Christian mystics in
Germany, and the works of alchemists in several parts of the
continent.

Kuzmanovic, Maja dubois@euronet.nl http://www.euronet.nl/~dubois/CON.html Completed the Master of Arts in Interactive Multimedia in 1997, with the cum laude thesis project 'Narrative Alchemy', at the Faculty of Art, Media and Technology in the Netherlands, where specialised in interactive film and storytelling. During her study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Italy and fashion department of the Utrecht School of the Arts, in the Netherlands, she worked on integration of old and new media within multimedia, audio-visual performances, fashion shows and print-media. As a graduated trend-forecaster and hypermedia designer, she concentrates on developing and visualising content for interactive multimedia, VR, internet, video and theatre productions. Recently received a grant from the Dutch Foundation for Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, as the young artist significant for the novel developments in art and design. Currently working as Artist in Residence for a joint project "Hypermedia Storytelling in projective VR" with CWI (Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and GMD (National Centre for Information Technology) in Bonn, Germany. She is presently involved in forming the "Future Arts Corporation" in Brussels, Belgium, a forum for media artists, scientists and technologists. Recently participated at MILIA '96 in Cannes, France; Doors of Perception 96 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Lumiere on-line Festival for Interactive Film and Storytelling; International Film Festival in Rotterdam, the Netherlands; ISEA 97 in Chicago, USA; ACM Multimedia in Seattle, USA; VDB4 in l'Aquila, Italy; ISEA98 in Liverpool, England; and on various exhibitions in the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia...
