This paper will discuss on research
finding of Wayang "Virtual" which is an experimental attempt at combining
traditional wayang kulit together with three dimensional model using the 'IRIS
Showcase" Silicon Graphic software. During the performance, the source of light from a projector illuminates the interaction of a three dimensional model with traditional wayang kulit. Two Dalang (puppet masters) are effectively manipulating shadows and the three-dimensional model that are being illuminated on the screen. Traditional musical instruments together with computer aided music (MIDI) from background accompaniments. The three-dimensional model kept to real time animation movements using a mouse. The manipulation of colours on the screen is done digitally depending on the development in the story. This performance project was first presented at the First Electronic Art Exhibition at National Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur from 26 November - 12 December 1997 and a computer demonstration of it was held during the Seminar on Technology - Assisted Teaching and Learning in Universities- August 1997, Kuching Sarawak. Project Objectives: To combine arts and multimedia technology yet preserving Malaysian culture and identity. To study the responses of audience towards the dynamics and change within the culture of wayang kulit performances and wayang kulit music. To apply computer media into the performances and music of wayang kulit. To introduce UNIMAS as the leader in the arts and multimedia technology. Synopsis of story line The plot centres upon the nightmare of Seri Rama - in which one of wayang kulit community is threatened by the new arrival of another. Seri Rama, representing the existing members of the wayang kulit accompanied by Wak Itam and Wak Piee go on a hunt to destroy the alien, "Mat Virtual". Mat Virtual who originates from electronic energy and power, and thus being well versed with digital information is likely to be able to control the screen forever. The struggle and fight that ensue symbolizes the change and contradictions within the thinking processes of Malaysian community towards the concept of integration between technology and culture. |
