Abstract:

In the project MEMORY programming is used as artistic material. It not solely aims a functioning application, but the creation of a system which forms a visual and textual language. The system is able to pick up and present multiple contents, associate to them freely and transfer the output into a homogeneously perceivable environment. The formulation of content takes place by a programming based free composition of the control and regulation of the system. The interrelation of factors such as time (syn- and assynchronicity, real- and machine time(duration of a single loop), rhythm), algorithms, perceivability (borders, overlaps, feed in, feed back), location/ non location, (objects, events, data bases, network), etc. is shaped with the purpose to evolve content specific aesthetical solutions.

Users of the system initialize and trigger couples of textual and visual generation processes. A process couple generates onto the same display object. During the development it appeared, that a 1:1 synchronisation of textual and visual process outputs rather shortens their contentual strength then to enforce them. Therefore the visual process is allowed to behave independently from the textual process and viceversa, each according to its aesthetical necessities, but both continously communicate the resulting states to each other and react on them.

The resulting memory phantoms - autonomous visual-textual objects - exist in between their visual and textual meaning and are interwoven with the users interaction. The subtle relation of the generation of textual and visual meaning and the gap of their appearance in between overlapping and controversity, evolve poetic statements of the virtual environment on the display.
