Ocupação

Itaú Cultural is presenting the fourth edition of Ocupação, which will be dedicated to the visual artist Abraham Palatnik. The Project has been created to foster a dialog between the new generation of artists and the creators that have influenced them; it is part of the Institute’s permanent work, and includes—among other initiatives—activities to encourage contemporary production and preserve artistic memory.

The exhibition is curated by Aracy Amaral, and is an opportunity for several audience profiles to become familiar with Palatnik’s work—through the artist’s exercises and studies in the field of technological art. It will also be a space where the institute can focus its educational action on broadening and enhancing the audience’s understanding of the role played by artists such as this native of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, who later settled in Rio de Janeiro.

In earlier editions, Ocupação was dedicated to a presentation of the output of benchmark artists from the visual arts (Nelson Leirner), the theater (Zé Celso), and from literature (Paulo Leminski). Moving forward with the project, we will be focusing in February 2010 on the music and legacy of Recife musician Chico Science, creator of the mangue beat (or ‘mangrove swamp beat’) movement, through objects that were landmarks over the course of his career. Cinema, the visual arts (again) and technological art will also be the focus in 2010 through individual shows of benchmark artists from these fields.
