José Wagner Garcia holds a doctorate degree in arts and biosemiotics. From 1988 to 1991, he had scholarships at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) and the MIT Medialab. He was a precursor in the fields of skyart, spaceart and bioart, in partnership with artists Otto Piene and Joe Davis.

In 2006, he produced NIP (Nuvens de Interação Proteica [Protein Interaction Clouds]), an art-science experiment developed in the Zero Gravity project directed by the Brazilian astronaut Marcos Pontes during his stay on board the International Space Station. As an architect, he designed more than 300 buildings and directed various art-science projects and films, in addition to publishing the books Amazing Amazon – Evolutionary Aesthetics, in 1997, and A Eco e Tecnociência na Arte de José Wagner Garcia, organized by Lúcia Santaella, in 2013. His main current activity is architecture and art-science. In 1990, he started the concept of bioprogrammable art and architecture. He is the director of Noosfera Arquitetura.
