AN ARTIST PASSIONATE ABOUT DIVERSE ARTISTIC EXPERIMENTATION

Geraldo de Barros moved with naturalness and originality between photos, paintings, posters, tables and chairs and created diverse and coherent work. He worked for half a century on a path exhibited by this most extensive exhibition of his work

After presenting a broad overview of the work of Beatriz Milhazes, Itaú Cultural is spotlighting the career of another great name in the visual arts in Brazil. In Geraldo de Barros – imaginário, construção e memória [Geraldo de Barros – Imagination, Construction and Memory], the public has access to a wide selection of productions – the most extensive ever shown – by this artist who moved with naturalness and originality through different areas, from painting and photography to the manufacture of furniture, always driven by a passion for experimentation.

Without hierarchizing the areas of expression he worked in, Geraldo created a multiple but consistent oeuvre. He made photos, paintings, posters and signs, tables and chairs as someone who is ultimately doing the same thing: art.

Curated by Lorenzo Mammi and Michel Favre, the exhibition relied on support from Geraldo’s family throughout the process of its development. The exhibition space covers the artist’s career – from the 1940s to the 1990s – while also touching on the context in which it was developed and the people that he influenced.

Itaú Cultural’s website, presents more contents about Geraldo. It is possible, for example, to look at the online version of the show Fotografia modernista brasileira [Brazilian Modernist Photography], with images by the artist that belong to the institution’s collection, and to access the artist’s entry in the Itaú Cultural Encyclopedia of Brazilian Art and Culture.
