COMPLETE WORK, TRACES AND REMAINS OF THE LEGACY LEFT BY BARROS

The artist's career carries a rich mix of genres and techniques, in a constant back and forth between the intimate and the public, in addition to the latest series of works, which he himself named Leftovers (Sobras), revealing traces of his life to everyone

Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998) lived the second half of the 20th century with the constant concern to include alterity in his artistic project, either through the socialization of the artwork as a form/object in and of itself – understood for what it in fact is, without the need for external references – or through the reelaboration of symbols of consumer society in monumental paintings or threatening figures. In a constant back-and-forth movement between the intimate and the public work, he also created accessible, modular furniture pieces that have accompanied generations of Brazilians, making it nearly familiar to them.

The oeuvre of this painter, printmaker, photographer and furniture designer consists of a rich mixture of genres and techniques. From all of this, Geraldo left us traces and remains, with which he himself played, naming his last series of works Sobras [Remains], in which he made certain aspects of his life public.

His career is portrayed here in the form of a timeline, offering an overview that emphasizes the relationships between artistic practices and eras. The show is also punctuated by words by Geraldo himself and from a selection of documents from his personal archive.
