The educator, writer, and patron of Brazilian education since 2012 is honored at the 53rd exhibit of the institution's Occupancy series. The exhibit dives into Freire's life story from his birth in Recife, in 1921, to his death in São Paulo, in 1997.
His childhood, intellectual development, experience in Angicos – where he applied the literacy method recognized throughout the world –, exile, and his return to Brazil draw the continuous and coherent line of his existence presented in this exhibit.
This Occupancy reveals the repercussion of Paulo Freire's ideas and tells his life, from the shade of a mango tree in the state of Pernambuco to more than 30 countries, from exile during the military regime to international notoriety
Itaú Cultural produced a publication that has guests representing areas such as health, safety, music, theater, photograph, and architecture to tell how they have related their work to the knowledge learned by Freire. Here is the editorial text.
Educator Ana Mae Barbosa wrote a text for Paulo Freire Occupancy whose title expresses its content – Paulo Freire: someone to be missed, an influencer, an always positive interference in my life
An interactive map at the end of the exhibit shows all the places around the world that were impacted by Paulo Freire’s work. Before getting to this map, visitors walk through the educator's life in displays that begin with his birth and education, then his successful experience in Angicos, his forced exile for 16 years, and his return to Brazil, where he continued to dedicate to education until 1997, the year of his death. Follow the step by step here.

One month after the opening of the exhibit, Itaú Cultural launches the podcast series Dialogues about Paulo Freire. Educators, researchers, and social scientists, such as Moacir Gadotti and Sérgio Haddad, among others who had experiences with Freire, will help the audience learn more about him.
Curated by educator and researcher Gleyce Kelly Heitor, Wednesdays with Paulo Freire ("Quartas com Paulo Freire") consists of nine online meetings, which can be watched in an integrated or independent manner, with conferences and round tables on the political and pedagogical legacy of Paulo Freire
The Department of Education and Relationship of Itaú Cultural, which is part of the curatorship of Paulo Freire Occupancy, organized a series of online activities that brings the audience closer to his universe in a playful and creative way.
See audiovisual excerpts that are part of the exhibit and that approach Freire from different perspectives. In the first one, educators Ana Maria Araújo Freire – the widow of the philosopher –, Ângela Antunes, and educator Marcos Garotti talk about their experience living and and working with him. This video ends with a brief reflection by Freire himself.
In the second and third videos, lawyer Marcos Guerra, who worked with him when he was still a law student, talks about
his experience in the city of Angicos and the performance of the students. Then Lícia Martins, a ballet dancer who taught with Pina Bausch and is now a member of Teatro Castro Alves, talks about the German and the Brazilian methods.
The last two videos are short talks by Freire. The first one is from an interview with Edney Silvestre for the Milênio TV show, on GloboNews, in 1997. The other one was recorded for Museu da Pessoa in 1993.
