On the centenary of Paulo Freire's birth, Itaú Cultural dedicates its new Occupancy to the philosopher of education

The educator, writer, and patron of Brazilian education since 2012 is honored at the 53rd exhibit of the institution's Occupancy series. The exhibit dives into Freire's life story from his birth in Recife, in 1921, to his death in São Paulo, in 1997.

His childhood, intellectual development, experience in Angicos – where he applied the literacy method recognized throughout the world –, exile, and his return to Brazil draw the continuous and coherent line of his existence presented in this exhibit.

InstituTional

Exhibit follows the rich life story of the thinker of educational practice and its living power

This Occupancy reveals the repercussion of Paulo Freire's ideas and tells his life, from the shade of a mango tree in the state of Pernambuco to more than 30 countries, from exile during the military regime to international notoriety

EDITORIAL

Publication attests to the relevance of the studies initiated by Freire and extended to other areas of expression

Itaú Cultural produced a publication that has guests representing areas such as health, safety, music, theater, photograph, and architecture to tell how they have related their work to the knowledge learned by Freire. Here is the editorial text.

AUDIOVISUAL

More information about Paulo Freire

See audiovisual excerpts that are part of the exhibit and that approach Freire from different perspectives. In the first one, educators Ana Maria Araújo Freire – the widow of the philosopher –, Ângela Antunes, and educator Marcos Garotti talk about their experience living and and working with him. This video ends with a brief reflection by Freire himself.

In the second and third videos, lawyer Marcos Guerra, who worked with him when he was still a law student, talks about

his experience in the city of Angicos and the performance of the students. Then Lícia Martins, a ballet dancer who taught with Pina Bausch and is now a member of Teatro Castro Alves, talks about the German and the Brazilian methods.

The last two videos are short talks by Freire. The first one is from an interview with Edney Silvestre for the Milênio TV show, on GloboNews, in 1997. The other one was recorded for Museu da Pessoa in 1993.
