A series of meetings maps the different dimensions and readings of Freire's legacy

Curated by educator and researcher Gleyce Kelly Heitor, Wednesdays with Paulo Freire ("Quartas com Paulo Freire") consists of nine online meetings, which can be watched in an integrated or independent manner, with conferences and round tables on the political and pedagogical legacy of Paulo Freire

The series of meetings Wednesdays with Paulo Freire(“Quartas com Paulo Freire”) will take place every Wednesday from October 6th to December 1st, from 7 pm to 9 pm BRT. Curated by educator and researcher Gleyce Kelly Heitor, this series of nine meetings in different formats addresses Paulo Freire's practice and philosophy, as well as reinterpretations of his ideas in areas such as healthcare, culture, feminism, racism, agroecology, music, and theater. It aims to map the different dimensions given to Freire's line of thought. Below is a summary of each of these meetings, which can be accessed via Zoom with previous registrations on Sympla platform, on dates to be defined.

OCTOBER 6 – OPENING CONFERENCE:
Opening Conference: The Importance of Reading Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire is considered the third most cited author in the field of human sciences worldwide. With an educational thinking permeated by ideals such as freedom, autonomy, and emancipation, the author left a theoretical and epistemological legacy where theory and practice are integrated, aiming to build a fair and egalitarian society. The theme of this conference will be the importance of Paulo Freire’s line of thought in the contemporaneity and topicality of the reflections bequeathed by him.
The conference will be given by professor, researcher, and social activist Sergio Haddad and hosted by Claudiney Ferreira, manager of Itaú Cultural's Audiovisual and Literature Center.

OCTOBER 13
Round table: Paulo Freire, Culture, and the Arts
This meeting establishes a dialogue about the presence of Paulo Freire's line of thought in the training of artists and cultural agents, drawing attention to the prominence of culture, arts, and aesthetics in the author's line of thought. How do artists make use of and adopt this line of thought? We aim to discuss how Paulo Freire's work is given new meanings, thus contributing to new methods and ways of thinking and creating.
Artist, art educator, and textbook author Béa Meira and Richard Riguetti, actor in the Paulo Freire, o andarilho da utopia ("Paulo Freire, the Wanderer of Utopia") show, will give the conference, which will be hosted by rapper, geographer, and art educator Renan Inquérito, PhD in Education from CES – University of Coimbra.

OCTOBER 20
Round table: Wandering Ideas

The movement, circulation, and multiplicity of contexts were part of Paulo Freire's career, both for the power of his thought, which made him be recognized and requested in different cities, states, and countries, and for his political exile, which brought about ethical, political, and epistemological shifts in his life and work. The themes addressed in this meeting are the places where Paulo Freire's line of thought circulates today and what the international repercussions of his ideas are.
The participants in this panel are Abdeljalil Akkari, professor at the University of Geneva, and Gladys Ayllon Yares, from the Paulo Freire Institute – University of Berlin. The meeting will be hosted by Roberta Scatolini, educator and doctoral student in feminist studies at the Center for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra.

OCTOBER 27
Conference: Paulo Freire at the Crossroads with Exu
The pedagogy of crossroads and the creative power embodied in orisha Exu, combined with the thought of Paulo Freire, is the starting point for establishing a dialogue on education as a task of decolonization.
The conference will be given by educator and writer Luiz Rufino, professor at the Baixada Fluminense Education School (UERJ), and hosted by educator and researcher Gleyce Kelly Heitor, curator of the seminar.

NOVEMBER 3
Conference: Pointing Pedagogy Towards the South
This conference addresses “sulear” ("to point towards the South") as a central concept to place Paulo Freire's line of thought in Latin American critique against the epistemic violence that underlies the ideals of modernity and progress, which were imposed in the southern hemisphere as truly Eurocentric imperatives and guided by the updating of coloniality.
It will be presented by Oscar Jara, member of the Latin American and Caribbean Council for Social Education, and hosted by Erick Morris, historian and PhD student in Postcolonial Studies at CES – University of Coimbra.

10 de novembro
Round table: Legacies and Disagreements

In this meeting, the relationship between the resurgence of conservatism in Brazil and the threats to Paulo Freire's legacy are addressed as a crisis, especially in the public sector. One of the issues addressed is whether one can think that defending Paulo Freire's work means defending free thinking.
Flávio Brayner, professor at the Education Center of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), and Walter Kohan, professor at the Center for Education and Humanities of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) will discuss this topic. The round table will be hosted by Francisco Sá Barreto, professor at the Department of Museology and Anthropology of UFPE.

NOVEMBER 17
Roundtable: Training Beyond School
Here, the dialogue is about the transdisciplinary and multifaceted character of Paulo Freire's line of thought, reflecting on training as something that transcends school and extends to other spheres of society. The focus of this debate will be healthcare policies, agroecology, participatory democracies, and how the author inspires and lays the foundation for practices in these areas of knowledge.
The dialogue will be between Abdalaziz Moura, director of Serta in Pernambuco, Vera Joana Bornstein, researcher at Fiocruz, and sociologist Neca Setúbal. This round table will be hosted by Gleyce Kelly Heitor.

NOVEMBER 24
Conference: For a Feminist Reading of Paulo Freire

This meeting seeks to highlight the relation between Paulo Freire's thinking and feminism and popular education, pointing to the need to think, from a Latin American perspective, on radical experiences of pedagogies committed to end gender inequalities.
The conference will be given by Claudia Korol, a feminist communicator, member of the Pañuelos en Rebeldía Social Education Center, in Argentina. The conference will be hosted by Julia Benzaquen, professor at the Department of Sociology at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (UFRPE) and at the Popular University of Social Movements (UPMS).

DECEMBER 1
Round table: Paulo Freire and Joy
In the closing meeting, we aim to joyfully celebrate Paulo Freire's legacy, evoking the centrality of themes such as love, hope, friendship, and joy that are present in his line of thought as foundations for a democratic and emancipatory education.
This dialogue will be between Ana Mae Barbosa, a full professor retired from the University of São Paulo (USP/SP), Nita Freire, an educator and the widow of Paulo Freire, and Gleyce Kelly Heitor.
