Exhibit follows the rich life story of the thinker of educational practice and its living power

This Occupancy reveals the repercussion of Paulo Freire's ideas and tells his life, from the shade of a mango tree in the state of Pernambuco to more than 30 countries, from exile during the military regime to international notoriety

Professor Paulo Freire (1921-1997), always in dialogue with his students, learned that it was necessary to listen to them and to work together; endowed with great social sensitivity, he also understood through them that education is not separated from the living conditions and perspectives of each person. Therefore, he developed an educational practice that is based on the universe of students and at the same time considers and builds the world. It was necessary to teach them how to write “house” and to defend that everyone should have one to live in.

With a successful literacy method – which was tested, in addition to other experiences in the country, in Angicos (Rio Grande do Norte), a city in which 300 people learned to read and write in 40 hours – and a philosophy marked by words such as freedom, indignation, hope, awareness, love, and autonomy, the thought and attitudes of Paulo Freire became influential in Brazil and around the world in the field of education and beyond.

On the centenary of this philosopher, writer, and educator, this Occupancy presentshis life story and its living power. We follow the repercussion of his ideas – communicated in more than three dozen books – and we tell his life, from the shade of a mango tree in Pernambuco to more than 30 countries, from exile during the military regime to international notoriety. Paulo Freire Occupancy also has a printed publication, which features interviews with several people who did not follow him, who advised people not to follow him, but to transform him. Part of the exhibit and some exclusive contents are available on itaucultural.org.br/occupation.
