Conversations with intellectuals to learn more about Paulo Freire's line of thought and educational actions

One month after the opening of the exhibit, Itaú Cultural launches the podcast series Dialogues about Paulo Freire (“Diálogos sobre Paulo Freire”). Educators, researchers, and social scientists, such as Moacir Gadotti and Sérgio Haddad, among others who had experiences with Freire, will help the audience learn more about him.

In six episodes, podcast Dialogues about Paulo Freire will go live on October 18th on Itaú Cultural’s website www.itaucultural.org.br and on Spotify and Apple Podcasts apps, which can be accessed by a smartphone or a computer. This podcast brings interviews with professors, biographers, and people who had experiences with the intellectual, shedding light on his various sides to help the audience learn more about his life and work.

Participants include educator Madalena Freire and the PhD in international law Marcos Guerra, in the first episode. Moacir Gadotti, honorary president of the Paulo Freire Institute and Ângela Antunes, pedagogical director of the same institute, in the second episode. The third episode brings educator Ana Maria Araújo Freire, the widow of Paulo Freire. The fourth presents educator and social scientist Lutgardes Costa Freire, son of Paulo and Elza Freire. The next one brings art educator Ana Mae Barbosa, his former student, and educator Gleyce Kelly Heitor. The podcast series ends with educator and researcher Sérgio Haddad and Walter Kohan, an educator, researcher, and the author of Paulo Freire mais do que nunca: uma biografia filosófica (“Paulo Freire more than ever: a philosophical biography”).

EP 1 – PAULO FREIRE AND THE ANGICOS EXPERIENCE

Educator Madalena Freire and the PhD in international law Marcos Guerra talk about the literacy experience in Angicos (Rio Grande do Norte), in 1963. The event was attended by graduates from various areas, such as dentistry, law, and journalism, who got organized to apply Paulo Freire's method in 40 hours.

EP 2 – PAULO FREIRE AS A MANAGER

Moacir Gadotti, honorary president of the Paulo Freire Institute, talks about the educator's career, pointing out the importance of his experience in Angicos (Rio Grande do Norte) and his work abroad in the construction of his thinking. Ângela Antunes, pedagogical director at the same institute, comments on Paulo Freire's role in the Secretariat of Education of São Paulo and highlights the impact of the educator's ideas on her work and on the city's public education.

EP 3 – PAULO FREIRE'S LEGACY

Educator Ana Maria Araújo Freire, the widow of Paulo Freire, shares his life story, highlighting the beginning of his studies at Colégio Oswaldo Cruz – where his father was the principal –, his time at SESI, his experience in the city of Angicos (Rio Grande do Norte), his exile and return to Brazil, as well as Freire's experience as the secretary of education of the city of São Paulo.

EP 4 – PAULO FREIRE AROUND THE WORLD

Educator and social scientist Lutgardes Costa Freire, son of Paulo and Elza Freire, recalls their family life during Freire’s exile. He talks about the importance of Elza in the development of the literacy method and the educator's thinking, as well as the process of returning to Brazil in June 1980.

EP 5 – INTERDISCIPLINARY PAULO FREIRE

Art educator Ana Mae Barbosa, a former student of Paulo Freire, recalls his career and how she met him. Educator Gleyce Kelly Heitor talks about the creation of the study and reading group of Freire's work, which observes the educator's historical context and the dialogue with artists during their experiences. The educators reminisce about the Art and Teaching Week (“Semana de Arte e Ensino”) at the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1980, which discussed, among other subjects, art education as a school subject. Ana Mae was one of the organizers of the event, and she talks about Paulo Freire’s participation.

EP 6 – PAULO FREIRE: TWO PROFILES

Educator and researcher Sérgio Haddad, author of the book O educador, um perfil de Paulo Freire (“The educator, Paulo Freire’s profile”), talks about his first contact with Freire’s line of thought and comments on important aspects of his life. Walter Kohan, educator, researcher, and author of the book Paulo Freire mais do que nunca: uma biografia filosófica (“Paulo Freire More Than Ever: A Philosophical Biography”) talks about the life and work of the educator.
